Akara Yoga Shastra

(The Imperishable Yoga)

Aksara is OM: it is "the irreducible vibration that precedes meaning, composes meaning, but is not absorbed into it (Roberto Calasso)."

As the the Mandukya Upanishad, in a deliberately eloquent translation by Juan Mascaro, expresses:  "OM. This eternal Word is all: what was, what is and what shall be - and what beyond is in eternity.  All is OM."

OM is peace and love!  It is the center of your being.  Meditate on the sound of OM - this is Aksara Yoga.  Furthermore, this is consistent with Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, which presents that one finds Yoga within the stillness of the mind, or Union with the Self, as the way to liberation and freedom.  This is consistent with the Chandogya Upanishad, which says that the Self that dwells in our hearts is the Self that can only be realized in the silence and stillness of understanding that we are but Spirit and that our minds and hearts must be truthful and pure, finding - beyond all forms and words - true joy in the essence of our being.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

 Student Testimonial:
"I'm really glad I had the chance to participate in Dave's Saturday yoga workshop.  It was centering and quietly challenging -- very positive energy!"

The practice of chanting and/or listening to the Gayatri Mantra is the portal to Aksara.

"I've studied with a lot of teachers, but Dave has a way of making Yoga very *real* and pertinent in my daily life. Couldn't be happier. Thanks Dave!"

"There is never any end.  There are always new sounds to imagine; new feelings to get at.  And always, there is the need to keep purifying these feelings and sounds so that we can really see what we've discovered in its pure state.  So that we can see more and more clearly what we are.  In that way, we can give to those who listen the essence, the best of what we are.  But to do that at each stage, we have to keep on cleaning the mirror."
